Last night I was able to participate as a guest on Hawaii PBS television to discuss the issue of what marriage is and should be with my friend, James Hochberg, Attorney and President of Hawaii Family Advocates. We debated Justice Steven Levinson, Retired State Supreme Court Justice and Renea Stewart, same-sex marriage advocate.

I really thought the host, Dan Boylan, did a very good job of keeping the conversation lively and balanced.

A Visit with our Gender Studies Friends

Last week I got an invitation to participate in a campus-wide forum on the nature of gender at a university up in Denver. I very much like going to these because it’s good to go be with people who see the world differently than you do, and try to really listen to what they have to say.

This particular forum was quite interesting – as such things typically are. I wrote about the experience of the day over at Boundless.

SNL had a great skit this week in honor of the Iron Lady. For those of a certain age who were in the throes of their teen angst during her tenure and remember the relationship between her and the emerging British punk scene, this piece is spot on.

Finally, Some Tough Questions on SS Parenting

The Supreme Court last week, in their hearing oral arguments on the California Prop 8 case, asked some surprisingly tough and searching questions on whether it is wise to de-gender the family. Not sure if I know of one mainline media journalist or commentator – who is not a partisan – who has even considered that their might good reason to question redefining marriage and the family in such a way, much less asked them.

I wrote a summary of these important questions from the hearings last week and the First Things blog posted it, with a remarkably 2600 (and counting) shares on FB.

Anyway, here it is.

Pope Francis’ Favorite Painting

New Advent has a nice run down on nearly everything you might want to know about our new Pope. One interesting tidbit is his favorite painting. It’s one of mine also, and it’s a curious one:

White Crucifixion (1938, Art Institute of Chicago).

It’s by Marc Chagall, a French painter of Russian and orthodox Jewish origins. A mid-20th Century artist, he has a modernist style, painting many biblical scenes.

This piece is a unique and lively presentation of Christ’s crucifixion, set in contemporary times amongst an expression of the reasons our Lord went to the cross. We sent him there and he went willingly and lovingly to redeem each of us from our own sin and rebellion. It is a wonderful piece for us to consider as we enter the tragedy of Good Friday and anticipate the glory Resurrection Sunday.

That is precisely what this wonderful painting is about.

For you youngsters out there, i came of age in the 1970s, a very funky time, more so than anything you might currently know or could imagine.

Don’t believe me? Consider this:

A real poet/musician on a real evening talk show where they wear real polyester clothes on a fake brick, shag carpet set and smoke while they’re doing it all. This is not make believe or some slick Hollywood trickery like the moon landing.
